Mr. Risikesh Shaha
(1988 - 1996)
Born in 1925 in Tansen of Palpa district, Mr. Shah was a scholar statesman and a multidisciplinary personality as he was a human rights activist, writer, diplomat, politician and a teacher. He went on to become General Secretary of Nepali Congress from 2009 B.S. to 2012 B.S. Appointed as the first permanent representative of Nepal for United Nations and theAmbassador to United States from 1956 to 1960, Mr. Shah also went on to chair the International Commission for investigating the tragic death of the then UN Secretary Dag Hammarskjöld in 1961. He was also the founding member of Amnesty International.
Mr. Riskesh Shah was the founder President of HURON. He served HURON from 1988 to 1996.During his time in HURON, the organizations was activelyinvolved in mass based movements against one party Panchayat System, restoration of multiparty democracy and drafting of the Constitution of 1990. Mr. Shah was an active human rights defender till his death in 2002. He also penned the popular book ‘Heroes and Builders of Nepal’ in 1998. In 2011, the Government of Nepal issued a Stamp of NRs. 5 in his honor.
